Towards the simulation of integrated urban drainage systems

Despite considerable modelling efforts made in recent years, a simulation tool that allows the simulation of integrated urban drainage systems is still under development. This paper presents the first approach towards this forthcoming tool that will deal with the hydraulics and biological processes of urban drainage systems as a whole. A hydraulic sewer simulator has been developed based on flexible programming languages as the first module for a management tool, which will integrate hydraulic and biological models for the urban drainage system. This paper includes some examples to illustrate the possibilities of the sewer simulator in the evaluation of dynamic flows and water levels in a real case. Steady-state results show good agreement with the ones provided by commercial packages (SewerCAT, MOUSE). Results for dynamic simulations are also provided.
