Sampling underneath landfill sites and contaminated sites

The AROBIS (Contaminated Sites Robot and Information System) project runs jointly with the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research. The project has three main partners: FlowTex a well known horizontal drilling company, Umweltforschungszentrum Leipzig-Halle, responsible for the analytical part and the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe designed and built the equipment for taking samples. In contrast to past practice, which relied on vertical drilling to obtain information about a hazard potential, the new approach is based on examining contaminated sites by horizontal drilling underneath the actual body of a landfill site.
