Modern Tram Systems and Control and Safety Technology illustrated by Tenerife Metro

Today, modern LRT and tram systems play an important role in solving the problems of inner city transportation. What makes a modern public transport system attractive? Punctuality, Reliability, Optimised Driving Times and Safety. This paper looks at Control and Safety technology, illustrates possible applications and practical deployment, focusing on safety-signaling solutions for LRT and tram systems. The reference for this presentation is Tenerife Metro, which is one of the newest and most modern tram system in the world. This system is shown from the point of view of the operator/tram authority and from the point of view of the supplier of the turnkey signaling system. Many new LRT and tram systems are planned worldwide, and the aim of this paper is to provide impulses and detailed information for transport authorities and operators, to enable them to design their new transportation systems in compliance with prevailing safety standards.
