This paper describes a marine rehabilitation project undertaken in Hall's Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada. To the authors' knowledge, the project represents the first Canadian demonstration of the use of innovative technologies, such as glass fibre reinforced polymer reinforcement and fibre reinforced concrete, to improve marine infrastructure. Within this small craft harbour a 40 m section of the existing combination wharf and breakwater was rehabilitated with a unique pile supported concrete deck and pile cap systems. The design and construction details relevant to the use of these innovative technologies in this structure are discussed. The results of an experimental program to verify the strength and safety of certain aspects of the innovative design are also presented.
