A Case Study and Lessons Learned: Production of Phenols and Alcohols during ISTD at a 1,4-Dioxane Site and Impacts to Media Treatment Processes

Background/Objectives. Over a six-month period in late 2012 and early 2013 thermal treatment of source areas was performed at a mixed solvent/1,4 dioxane site in Florida. This project was successful on many fronts, but exposed the treatment processes to challenges not envisioned in design including the formation/mobilization of semivolatile compounds from thermal decomposition of natural organic matter, and the observation of alcohols and methanol in final effluent that were not contemplated. This paper will review the project in case study form, reflecting on unanticipated challenges and consequences in a “lessons learned” format to the benefit of conference attendees.
