摘要
558,987. Phenolalcohols. KOEBNER, M. June 16, 1942, No. 8233. [Class 2 (iii)] Hydroxybenzyl monoalcohols are prepared by condensing phenols having more than one replaceable hydrogen in the molecule with formaldehyde in presence of an alkaline catalyst such as caustic soda, there being used at least five molecules of phenol for each molecule of formaldehyde. An example is given of the production of ortho- and para-hydroxybenzyl monoalcohols from phenol and formaldehyde. Phenol may be replaced by cresols, xylenoe, propyl, isopropyl or propenyl phenol. Formaldehyde may be replaced by a substance yielding it, such as hexamethylenetetramine.
