Background/Objectives. Aliphatic alcohols are effective partitioning tracers because of their high solubility in both water and NAPL. In a push-pull partitioning tracer test, NAPL within the swept volume of a tracer test will reduce the average distance the partitioning tracer travels relative to a conservative tracer away from the well during the injection or “push” phase. During extraction or the “pull” phase, recovery of the partitioning tracer is likewise delayed. When NAPL is present, these effects result in a partitioning tracer recovery curve that exhibits a shallower slope than the recovery curve of the conservative tracer.
