Sealing tar lake, esp. of brown coal gasification tar - by forming calcium carbonate surface layer to prevent emissions

Sealing of tar lakes or the like involves forming a CaCO3 layer on the lake by introducing CaO in the presence of existing or added water. Additional material, esp. shredded waste paper, waste wood or waste plastics, is pref. introduced into the tar lake for mechanical stabilisation of the CaCO3 layer. Gypsum may also be introduced into the tar lake. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for sealing tar lakes from brown coal gasification, e.g. the 'Terpe' and 'Zerre' dumps of the former DDR. Emissions are prevented or restricted in a simple and effective manner.
