In 2009, carbon tetrachloride (CT) and tetrachloroethene (PCE) were detected at 150,000 and 2,200 micrograms per liter (μg/L), respectively in the surficial aquifer at Site 47 at the Naval Support Facility Indian Head in Maryland. These concentrations are indicative of dense nonaqueous-phase liquid (DNAPL). The contamination resides in a silty sandy soil interval of 6 to 18 feet below ground surface. The site has extensive utilities and is currently used for explosives research, production and storage. The DNAPL area is approximately 15,000 square feet (SF) in size.
