Understanding groundwater flow and the influence of subsurface injection or extraction is critical to optimized system performance; especially, when considering the unique complexities of nonaqueous-phase liquids (NAPL). Specifically, capture zone analysis can be used as a cost-effective management tool to predict the extent of influence and guide system installation, operation, and optimization. A combination of methodologies was utilized to perform a capture zone analysis, with respect to time, for a site with a relatively large subsurface NAPL release to assist in the determination of extraction and injection well location, distribution, and performance rates. The site is located in an area where climactic limitations shorten the available time for active field work to the summer season; therefore, system setup, operation, and optimization must occur on a condensed time schedule.
