Applying NYSDEC's New Green Remediation Policy: 1(1/2) Years of Diverse Case Studies and Lessons Learned

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Division of Environmental Remediation (DER) issued its Green Remediation Policy (DER-31) on August 11, 2010. The new policy means that New York is the first state that has required green and sustainable considerations to be applied at all phases of the site remediation life cycle. It also requires for GSR to be applied on all programs and sites managed by the NYSDEC. The objective of DER-31 is to promote the use of sustainable practices such as low-carbon technologies, on-site and in situ treatment, habitat restoration, as well as the positive economic and social benefits of site reuse—with the overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
