Using a 0.75 horsepower Application Specific Power Module (ASPM) as an example,a powe module concept is described which represnets a major step forward in terms of level of integration.By combining core competences IGBTs and motion control ICs,it has been possible for a single semiconductor vendor to produce a fully integrated Variable Speed Drive (VSD) suitable for OEM and system integration markets,giving a true'plug and play' motor drive.Choice of power device substrate is discussed together with an in-depth description of the additonal electronics incorporated.Details are also given of the modelling and pre-production techniques which allow rapid-time-to-market to be achieved.
