The method involves detecting an increased power requirement for the drive unit by a detection unit (20). A power operation phase of the drive unit is started depending on a criteria for a specified time interval. A sub-phases of the power operation phase is defined by a control unit (30). An active boost phase and a passive boost phase are defined as the sub-phases of the power operation phase by the control unit.
