This paper discusses the effect of a Palladium catalyst, installed within the headspace, on the performance of VRLA cells. It includes the effects on positive and negative polarization, float currents, and gassing rates. These results are compared with cells without catalysts that served as controls. Catalysts placed within the headspace of the VRLA cells appear to scavenge the oxygen available and recombine it preferentially with the available hydrogen, polarizing the negatives in the process. The impact of these effects as well as that of catalytic poisons is discussed.
