Since the first tests carried out by sir Henry Bessemer (fig 1), more than one century ago, direct strip casting is a dream of generations of steelmakers as the most direct link from liquid steel to flat products. Over the last fifteen years, many teams have devoted important resources to develop a satisfactory process but, up to now, no full industrial success has been registered Main reasons for this delay are the very demanding requisites of this new process including technological challenges, hard material constraints, needs of accurate control and automation levels and of course, last but not least, a specific metallurgy.
