Accident rates, particularly in the construction industry, remain high over the years in Hong Kong. This is a reflection that safety provisions might not be adequate. Tighter regulations on safety in all areas including construction sites, industrial workplaces, and areas for non-industrial purposes such as offices, public transportation systems and even shopping malls should be enhanced. Before doing so, the first step is to review critically the available safety codes and regulations to identify the deficiency areas. This paper reports on such an investigation on surveying the existing codes and regulations for safety. Application areas are identified and briefly described. Based on the results, recommendations are made to the Authority in upgrading occupational safety and health for the workplaces.
