The presence of contaminant microorganisms in semen is an important subject to be considered wherever reproductive problems appear with artificial insemination (A.I.). Contamination of insemination doses with microorganisms will cause different problems: Semen quality deterioration (motility and acrosomes), presence of sperm agglutiation and consequently decrease in reproductive capacity. Diffusion of viruses and bacteria. Vulval discharges and endometritis. Semen can be contaminated by pathogenicbacteria which cause extragenital infection in boars. But it can also be easily contaminated with saprophytic or opportunistic bacteria during collection or processing in the laboratory. The present study was established to determine the source of bacterial contamination in semen and its possible relationship with bacterial flora of the prepuce. A total of 304 extended semen samples from different parts of Spain were analyzed during a period of four years (May 1993-May 1997.) All the samples were storedat 15 deg C after dilution. The baclenal isolation was earned out by conventional bacteriological methods and for final identification, API galleries were used API, BioMerieux, S. A. 69280 Marcy L'Etoile. France)
