Textbooks describe swine influenza (SI) and Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia (APP) with well defined clinical symptoms, but these diseases prove to be indistinguishable. In this study, we describe clinical, serological and post-mortem findings of an outbreak of respiratory disease with symptoms resembling SI. The herd affected consists of 300 sows and 2400 finishing pigs. The finishers are housed in units of 144 animals with 12 pens. All in all out was practised per unit but within pens litters were mixed in current feed experiments. The herd had a history of being infected with APP serotype 2.
