Setting Up a Secure Public Workstation

As Rider University Library is a government depository library, we are offered one free subscription to Stat-USA/Internet, a database that contains an enormous amount of financial information. We know that students in the Rider MBA program will use it heavily. But according to the agreement with Stat-USA/Internet, the library is limited to one user at a time on the database. No faculty, students, or patrons shall have access to the ID and password. There are several issues that we need to consider before we can set up the workstation. 1. We need an automatic logon to the Stat-USA/Internet web site and the password has to be encrypted. 2. We have to restrict the web browser so that Stat-USA/Internet is the only web site available on the workstation. 3. Every morning when the staff turns on the computer, logon to the network and Windows has to be automatic during the boot process without human intervention. 4. A security system needs to be established so that the workstation cannot be easily altered. In case the settings are violated, we should have the means to restore the workstation promptly. We shall also protect the workstation against virus. Software selected to accomplish the task includes WinSelect IKIOSK, KeyText, TweakUI, Everybody's Menu Builder, Windows 95 Policy Editor, Ghost and McAfee VirusScan. We have used a combination of those programs in creating a secure, successful public workstation.
