Based on experience with several industrial control projects, a sequential approach to control design has been developed, which divides complex control problems into a sequence of manageable sub-problems. This approach gives a flexible and easilymaintainable architecture which allows the incorporation of physical insights. In this paper, this philosophy is used to design a regulator for a steam generator. The design includes issues common to many practical problems - operating point dependent dynamics, pertinent actuator saturations, non-minimum phase behaviour and sensorfailures. The design presented achieves a balance between competing objectives and within the performance envelope dictated by the given constraints.
