Vibration control of smart plates using discretely distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator elements are investigated and the optimal placement and sizing of the piezoelectric actuators are studied. Modal control method is employed forvibration control of the plate in which the modal sensor and modal actuator are designed using the piezoelectric patches. A simple and practical criterion to obtain the optimal locations and sizes of the actuator elements are given which is independent of the initial condition of vibration of the plate and the control gains.
