The watersports industry belongs to the sector which probably takes most advantage of the natural environment. Its very existence depends on clean water. Eco-Management-Systems are internal instruments for the purpose of organising and controlling all environmental aspects and costs related to an enterprise. They are based on voluntary participation and aim to continuously improve the environmental situation of the entreprise, reduce costs and increase the political and social acceptance. The structural change from purely quantitative growth to an increase of quality is as fundumental for the water-sports industry as for any other sector. Environmental protection and service mean more quality, more quality of life and are the most important tools for realising this change. Considering the speed of development as well as the increasing pressure on entreprises, only proactive and dynamic systems have a chance of surviving and helping companies to remain competitive. Eco-Management-Systems are disigned to serve this purpose and to manage the speed of development together with a continuous improvement of the environmental situation. The collected information is important to optimise the concept, for data bases, market research and the development of political and environmental programmes. It is valuable for a large target group, such as marinas, tourist offices, charter companies, marina users, event management companies, etc. When communicating and implementing eco programmes, the argument of additional work and costs is often the main reason entreprises give for non participation. The work required to implement eco-management-systems can be minimised by providing detailed and standardised form sheets, checklist, questionnaires, eco-codes, etc. with given parameters, standards and precise instructions. By using instruments and tools like an eco-handbook, CD-ROM and internet services the presented concept offers a complete new communication and education system which enables marine companies and marinas to implement an individually tailored eco-management-system (MEMAS). The requirements/criteria can be "transported" by actively guiding the enterprises through the relevant steps and providing all the necessary information, instructions and instruments to fulfil the criteria given.
