The work presents results of studies of a reversible martensitic transformation induced by a tensile stress in single crystals of beta _1 -CuZnAl. The studies were carried out with the use of the Auleytner X-ray topography method. It was found that at one-variant martensitic transformation in the specimen there are small stresses visible on topograms in a form of parallel bands. When at the transformation two variants of the martensite plates occur the stresses are much larger. Especially large stresses are created during a cyclic martensitic transformation where in subsequent cycles there occurs a change in variants of the martensite plates. It was found that the relation of components of the rotation angle between the martensite and the parent phase has some hysteresis in a loading - unloading cycle.
