In order to study the effectiveness of the saturated zone (SZ) as a barrier for radionuclide migration at Yucca Mountain,Nevada,we have developed the S~4Z Model,a 3-D integral finite difference model for simulating flow in the SZ at Yucca Mountain Nevada~1(S~4Z is a acronym where the first five letters in "sub-site-scale-saturated zone" are represented by S~4Z). S~4Z was developed for use with TOUGH2.~2,3,4 In this report,we (i) summarize model development highlighting the geologic realism captured in the model,and (ii) present a simulation result that shows the significance of faulting to SZ flow.
