Teachers on-line: A Model for a Virtual Teacher Center

TAMID, operating at the Open University of Israel, is aiming to improve the standards of teaching in schools by adopting state of the art technologies and creating a combined learning, training and support environment for the benefit of teachers. TAMID focuses its efforts on junior high school science teachers as a goal to itself but also as a model for in-service teacher's education and for integration of technologies in learning. Experiments are performed in which various technologies and distance teaching strategies are used to enhance subject matter and pedagogical knowledge among teachers. Looking for the "right mix", combinations of different delivery means (i.e. text, video, audio, face to face meeting, asynchronous computer communication and synchronous satellite lectures) are used to deliver on-line refresher courses, "just on time" support by experts, and access to relevant information.
