How did the solar houses perform in Portugal?

In the last two decades several examples of passive solar constructions were built in Portugal. These buildings were designed by a small number of professionals very interested in these new technologies, for private clients and institutions whichin some cases were correlated with research projects in this area (1,2,3). The number of projects is fairly small: twenty two buildings have been identified in the course of the project called "Thermal Characterisation of Passive Solar Construction inPortugal", on which this paper is based as having some passive features. The aim of this project, with a planned duration of two years, is to identify these constructions and quantify their performance. We believe that the information collected will helpthe general building community to better understand the potential of these systems.This paper presents the first results regarding some of the cases studied during the first year of the project. The paper will focus on the overall analysis of the building envelopes, the performance of their passive solar systems (PSS), an analysis ofhow these buildings fit into the building thermal regulation and a discussion of some of the experimental and simulation results.
