Characterisation is important for improving and controlling the quality in the production of high temperature superconducting tape. The characterisation must be of a nondestructive kind and a contact free type is preferable, especially for long length tapes. Magnetic characterisation is contact free and have the potential of spatial resolution of the critical current in the superconducting tape. Until now work has been focusing on single filament tapes and has not considered multifilament tapes and the coupling of filaments. In this work we apply a Hall probe technique and measure the shielding and remanent fields induced by single and multifilament tapes. Measurements have been performed during ac and dc conditions and the results show that magnetic, characterisation may be useful for measuring critical currents as well as filament coupling, in multifilament tapes.
