Properties of amorphous SiBNC-Ceramic fibres

A new amorphous ceramic material consisting of Si, N, C, and B can be synthesized by pyrolysis of a preceramic polyborosilazane (PBS-Me) made of the "single source" precursor Cl{sub}3Si-NH-BCl{sub}2 (TADB). Novel ceramic fibers consisting ofborosilicon carbonitride (SiBN{sub}3C) can be synthesized from this polymer by using a simple melt spinning process, followed by an intermediate curing step and successive pyrolysis of the obtained infusible green fibers. In the present paper we report on the preparation of the ceramic fibres, as well as their thermal stability, and their mechanical behaviour, including high temperature creep data. The reported mechanical data will be correlated to the microstructure of the fibers.
