Laminate systems offer the best means of testing ideas aimed at restricting creep at the highest possible temperatures. Experimental results, reviewed by Deng & Warren on oxides will be described. Attention is then drawn to the very high strengthof laminates made as strained layer superlattices for semiconductor applications in heterojunctions. The difficulty of dislocation motion will be analysed in terms of coherency strain and this effect will be shown to be expected to operate up to themelting points of the solids involved.
