The huge demand supply gap for electric power in India is partially met by diesel generators. Generators although, inexpensive to purchase are generally expensive to operate and maintain. On the other ahnd large stand alone PV systems necessitate the PV array and the battery bank to be sized large enough for worst case weather conditions and peak load requirements. By combining small PV systems with diesel generators one can derive necessary techno-economic advantages. This paper discusses the techno-economic issues based on a 10KVA solar and diesel generator hybrid project being implemented in India for a small size farm house near Delhi. On a life cycle cost computation it is found that the hybrid system far ourweighs the stand alone diesel generator system.
