It is especially important in classrooms, where suitable conditions should be provided to convey speech communication for teachers and students. This paper investigated the acoustical conditions for optimizing the acoustical quality of a classroom through subjective Chinese speech intelligibility evaluation under different reverberation time and signal-to-noise ratio conditions in real elementary school classrooms in China. The combined objective acoustical index affecting the outcome of the speech intelligibility in classrooms were analysed and discussed, which included signal-to-noise ratio, reverberation time, speech sound pressure level and the age of children. The results showed that the combined index can be used to determine whether the acoustical conditions in a classroom meets the applicable requirements of children.
