An articulated arm robot equipped with a plasma cutting head manufactures profiled sections for shipbuilding. Based on CAD generated structural data for the profiled sections, robot path programs are created through a program generator in the main computer of the production system. Without any additional programming, the robot performs contour cuts on the 16 meter long raw profile bars so that they will be immediately available for their precisely fitted installation into the ship section. Thus, random sectional profile lengths may be manufactured. An additional robot stacks the profile sections onto nine (9) different pallets, based on the final destination of the sections at the construction site.
