A water tupelo, Nyssa aquatica L, - baldcypress, Taxodium distichum L. Rich., swamp located in the Mobile -Tensaw River Delta of Southwestern Alabama was harvested in 1986. Harvest treatments Included i.clearcutting with helicopter log removal (HELI), ii. HELI followed by skidder simulation (SKID), and iii. HELI followed by removal of all vegetation via glyphosate herbicide application (GLYPH). At age 7-yrs, total biomass, average densities, total heights, and diameters of SKID treatments were equal to or greater than those of the HELI treatment. Water tupeio responded more favorably to SKID treatment at the expense of Carolina ash, Fraxinus caroliniana L., which was more abundant in HELI treatment. The GLYPH areas have basically become freshwatermarshes. All treatments have significant groundflora components that have increased sediment accumulation 70-175 percent relative to an undisturbed reference area.
