QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR RADIOACTIVE WASTES DISPOSED OF IN THE MORSLEBEN SITE - PLANNING, PROCEDURES AND EXPERIENCES

Germany between 1978 and 1991 a repository for the disposal of radioactive waste was only accessible for waste producers in the former German Democratic Republic GDR: The former Morsleben salt mine. Since 1978 short-lived low and intermediate level radioactive wastes were disposed of in this mine. The emplacement operations were stopped after the reunification of Germany by court order early in 1991. After reversal of this order in June 1992 extensive safety assessments were performed resulting in the formulation of new waste acceptance requirements and quality assurance procedures to be followed in order to demonstrate the fulfillment of these requirements. The emplacement operations were resumed in January 1994, and the repository is now accessible for all German waste producers. In the following quality assurance measures performed for radioactive waste packages prior to disposal are explained and experiences gained in the course of the performance of these measures discussed.
