An understanding of the effects of twin boundaries on the properties of thin YBCO films is important for the potential application of these materials. Highly defective twin boundaries are thought to be main flux pining centres and so result in relatively high critical current densities in YBCO films compared to bulk YBCO single crystals. Such highly defective twin boundaries are also thought to be short circuits for diffusion of oxygen and the penetration paths for water (or OH species). MeV Ag~+-ion implantation at elevated temperatures is proposed as a possible method for strengthening twin boundaries and improving transport properties of YBCO films.
