Dofasco's project plan to optimize furnace performance consisted of 4 major steps: 1) Determination of the critical process measurements by examining their impact on a two stage heat and mass balance. 2) Improvement of these process control and monitoring sensors to allow accurate and timely evaluation of raw material and operating changes. 3) Establishment of monitoring techniques to maintain the quality of the data. 4) Improvement of the process by implementing new technology where economically feasible to further stabilize the operation. Dofasco's long term goal is to continue to optimize the Iron making process. Automation and sensor improvements will be an integral part of the overall plan.
