A new test apparatus was developed aiming at a precise measurement of mechanical quantities on the tractive performance of off-road vehicles. Especially, it enables us to perform a test under a constant contact load between a wheel and soil, while the contact load has not been able to be kept constant in most of existing apparatus. Further, displacement of soil particles beneath a wheel can be measured, from which a deformation of soil can be analyzed. The test results obtained by the use of this apparatus for a rigid wheel in sand are described.
