This work aims at analyzing the correlation of age with metastability in the healthy elderly population. Metastability is a mechanism that explains the capacity of the brain to spontaneously transition among oscillatory states in a complex network. The study estimated metastability through frequency variance analysis in electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. EEG signals were recorded from the healthy elderly population in the age group of 50 to 80 years. The study further explored the effect of metastability under resting and cognitive task conditions. The results revealed a positive correlation between age and frequency variance, inferring an inverse relationship between age and metastability. However, the analysis of metastability on resting and cognitive states did not reveal a statistically significant difference. Taken together, the study observed a negative effect of aging in the metastability of the brain.
