STATE OF THE ART OF TIN MILL PRODUCTS IN THE U.S.A.

The 1980s will be a decade of great change and of more challenges to the packaging manufacturers and their suppliers. This paper highlights some of the most revolutionary developments of the past two decades in cans and canmaking as exemplified by the appearance of a two-piece draw and wall-ironed beverage can and a two-piece draw/re-draw steel seamless food can.Other developments highlighted in the paper include the adoption of welded side seaming by can-makers and recent work on other metallic coatings as a possible substitute for tin.The immense strides that have been made in improving can steel quality are also discussed together with the effects of mandatory deposit legislation in many states throughout the U.S. This has led to environmentalists forcing the canmaking industry to examine their attitude to recycling of waste material.
