Senior/sophomore co-class instruction: Teaching interpersonalmanagement skills in engineering

The author describes the method of co-class instruction (CCI), anefficient educational structure to incorporate interpersonal managementskills (IPMS) education into the existing engineering curriculum. UsingCCI, seniors directly supervise project design teams composed ofsophomores. As project leaders, seniors are responsible for overallproject management, direct supervisory technical management, and formalperformance evaluation. Sophomores apply thier current knowledge andskills, e.g., electronic spreadsheets to simulate economics andtechnical processes, computer-aided design, elementary mass and energybalances, etc., to accomplish project tasks. CCI was incorporated intosenior design and sophomore thermodynamics/mass balance courses in theBiochemical and Food Process Engineering curriculum at Purdue University
