Studies related to Automated Ship Navigation (ASN) have beenprogressing positively in recent years. The increasing degree ofautomation can be divided into several levels – from those that assistmanned navigators by providing information for maneuvering to thosethat are completely unmanned. Preferably this is done step-by-step whileseeking to resolve technical and legal issues along the way. The purposeof the research reported herein is to develop an Automatic ManeuveringProcedure incorporating a Collision Avoidance factor based oninformation regarding ship proximity – an important factor in automatingthe maneuvering procedure. For this purpose, the entirely new CAP(Collision Avoidance Polygon) concept is herein proposed.This paper describes the method for generating CAP, the procedure forgenerating safety routes to avoid collisions, and the development of asimulation environment for its evaluation. Through the usage of the CAPconcept, a route that avoids the possibility of collisions can be generatedwith simple procedures.
