The development of an innovative connector technology to resolvenanosecond discontinuities in hot-swap applications is described.Hot-swap operation has been increasingly designed in to high-data rateand high-availability telecommunications equipment with bus-typearchitectures. Nanosecond discontinuities are shown to exist during suchmating/unmating of daughtercards while the system is running. CurrentCompactPCI hot-swap systems are designed with pre-charge circuitry thatcan react to discontinuities on the order of microseconds but they arenot capable of reacting to discontinuities that only last severalnanoseconds. Such nanosecond discontinuities lead to sufficient energytransfer to or from the bus to potentially alter signal levels. QuietMate Technology by Tyco Electronics eliminates any adverse effects ofsuch nanosecond discontinuities on the states of monitored signalsduring the hot-swap event. Extensive system simulations and mechanicaland electrical tests verified this technology and its effectivenesswithout any adverse effects on system and/or connector performance
