This paper describes the successful suspension test in start-up condition of a previously proposed design of a 6-slot/4-poleone-axis actively positioned single-drive bearingless motor. It requires only one unit of the three-phase inverter and onedisplacement sensor. The active axial suspension force and rotating torque are generated by d- and q-axis currents, respectively. The remaining rotor movements are passively stabilized by the repulsive passive magnetic bearings (RPMBs). To validexperimentally the suspension regulation capability, the prototype machine has been built and tested. In the experimental result, the stable magnetic suspension of the proposed machine is successfully confirmed in the start-up test.
