An Evaluation of the Development of Formative Assessment Strategies to Enhance Student Learning and Engagement

This paper summarizes the outcomes of a research project designed to investigate and develop active student engagement in learning by adopting various strategies in formative assessments. The research is based on a sample of 30 students and 9 tutors on a BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering Programme delivered at the University of Bolton RAK Academic Centre in 2018. The task aimed to motivate and encourage the passive learners to improve their grades and attendance by implementing innovative measures in formative tasks. The new measures taken were focused on feedback, feedforward, referencing, peer evaluation and portfolio submissions in formative assessments. The findings show that a number of strategies resulted in the enhancement of the students' motivation in formative activities thereby improving class attendance and learner grades.A comparative evaluation of class average in report marks, presentation marks and attendance shows a gradual increase of 5 to 11% from semester one performance to that of semester two.
