Evaluation of free computer applications in the teaching of kinematics in engineering

The implementation of Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) is becoming more frequent in various academic fields, within these, Mechanical Engineering is not a stranger to this trend. Although, there have been multiple developments of computer simulations for physics and basic sciences, there is, still, a timid and limited presence within the specialty of Mechanical Engineering. Therefore, it is difficult to evaluate the effect of these VLEs on the training of mechanical engineers. Taking these two aspects into account, a VLE focused on kinematics was implemented during the Dynamics and Mechanisms course, taught at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Antioquia. The use of free and open computer applications and their effects in the learning of complex engineering knowledge was evaluated. It was found that the incorporation of these type of applications could improve the level of appropriation of the various concepts of kinematics. In addition, through an analysis of the results, it was possible to identify some concepts that represent greater understanding difficulty and help the instructor provide the needed feedback to the group.
