Notes on Optimizing Two Tiers

Solutions like FAST or EasyTier allow multiple disk types to be combined into one unit of backend storage. This allows a more fined grained trade off between performance and cost. But even focusing just on cost, it is far from obvious which mix of drive technologies is the most cost effective. This paper describes, given a few assumptions, how to calculate the most cost effective mix of two given drive types.
