Culverts in seismically active areas are vulnerable to adverse effects of earthquake loading. Recent earthquakes events have shown that there is a need to better understand mechanisms associated with the seismic behavior of culverts. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive finite element study that investigate the static and dynamic behavior of culverts embedded at different depths. The main objective of this study is to develop an understanding of the effects of the culvert depth on its seismic behavior. Dynamic finite element simulations were conducted using the PLAXIS 2D software package. The material presented in this paper is considered to be of interest to researches and engineers.
