A new geometry of the defected ground structure (DGS) is explored for rectangular patch for suppressed cross-polarized (XP) fields. This DGS looks like a combination of an ¿¿¿L¿¿¿ and its mirror image and is termed as ¿¿¿L¿¿¿-shaped DGS. This promises to suppress the XP radiations in the H-plane by more than 15 dB and over a wide angular range around its bore sight. Geometry wise it is the smallest of all if compared with its earlier versions. Basic insight into this phenomenon using substrate field distribution is also presented in the paper.
