A REVIEW OF NON ABET ACCREDITED ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS

This paper is the second in a series studying the curriculum and accreditation of engineering management (EM) related programs. The first paper examined the auricular content of engineering management programs to determine common approaches and courses in fulfilling the engineering credits required for ABET accreditation. This paper examines the programs which appeared in an American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) listing of undergraduate EM programs which appeared to be non ABET accredited and found a number of issues. First there appears to be a strong trend among these programs to pursue ABET accreditation. Interestingly, this trend is split between three ABET commissions: EAC, ETAC, and ASAC. Second, there is inconsistency in nomenclature and data classification in the system employed to gather the ASEE information. As a result, there were a number of misclassifications found in the ASEE data listing. Finally, as an extension of the second point, there are programs in this ASEE list that are clearly not EM and should not be included in a listing of EM programs.
