Managing a Preventive Maintenance Program in the Most Effective and Efficient Manner Possible

1. An effective PM/PdM program should be based on the failure modes of the equipment assets in your facility. 1.1 Understanding the failure modes present in each piece of equipment, and how to identify those failure modes, should dictate your PM and PdM activities. 1.2 By understanding these failure modes, we can determine which PM/PdM strategy needs to be employed to properly maintain the asset. 2. If a PM/PdM task is being performed that: 2.1 Does not have the ability to identify a failure mode 2.2 Is not a regulatory or statutory requirement 2.3 Does not prevent a failure mode 3. Then...we are simply wasting our valuable craft time! 3.1 PdM technologies and PM tasks should be assigned based on known failure modes of an asset's components 3.2 By basing our PM/PdM program on known failure modes, we avoid the pitfalls of performing Emotional and Invasive PMs that waste man-hours, drive up maintenance costs, and do little or nothing to improve the reliability of the asset.
